Transaxle Reassembly

  1. On models with VTEC, go to next step. On models without VTEC, see DIFFERENTIAL SIDE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT  under TRANSAXLE ADJUSTMENTS.
  2. Drive oil seal into clutch housing. Set change piece into clutch housing. Install shift rod with detent hole facing up. Grease and install steel detent ball, spring and set screw. Tighten change piece bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install shift rod boots so hole faces down when transaxle is mounted in vehicle. Install oil chamber plate. Perform differential preload or side clearance adjustment. On models with VTEC, see DIFFERENTIAL PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT  under TRANSAXLE ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. Insert mainshaft spring washer and thrust washer with angle against clutch housing. Tape mainshaft splines before installation, then align mainshaft and countershaft with shift forks and install as an assembly.
  4. Install change holder assembly in clutch housing. Tighten bolts to specification. See Fig 1 . Assemble shift piece and interlock and insert shift guide shaft.
  5. Measure distance from top of shift piece shaft to top of interlock after mounting shift guide shaft. Clearance "A" should be .468-.484" (11.90-12.30 mm). See Fig 2 . If clearance is not correct, check installation. Install reverse idler gear and idler gear shaft into clutch housing. Install reverse shift fork into clutch housing. Install oil guide plate and 72-mm thrust shim into housing. Install oil gutter plate and 16-mm sealing bolt.

NOTE: This transaxle uses no gaskets between major housings. Use Honda Genuine Liquid Gasket (08178-550000-OE). Assemble housing within 20 minutes after applying liquid gasket. Allow 30 minutes curing time before filling with oil.
  6. Apply liquid gasket onto transaxle mating surface of clutch housing. Install dowel pins onto clutch housing. Place transaxle housing over clutch housing, ensuring shafts are aligned.
  7. Lower transaxle housing with snap ring expanded and set snap ring into groove of countershaft bearing. Ensure snap ring is securely seated into groove of countershaft bearing. Snap ring opening clearance should be .180-.327" (4.57-8.30 mm).
  8. Place transaxle hanger between bolts No. 11 and 15. Tighten transaxle housing bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m) in sequence. See Fig 3 .
  9. NOTE: Transaxles have 16-mm and 32-mm sealing bolts.
  10. Apply liquid gasket to 16-mm and 32-mm sealing bolt threads. Tighten sealing bolts to specification. Install and tighten reverse idler gear shaft bolt. Install back-up light switch, and tighten bolt to specification. Install harness and harness clamp, tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
