Installation Guide:
On the diagram below we can see the wiring diagram presented by the supplier ALCOLOCK with the BCM input as per installation:
Alcolock Circuit Diagram:
Method 1 - Hardwire the device into the IP harness by making use of the provide sacrificial connector:
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
- Install the ECU in an accessible area that does not obstruct the normal operation of the vehicle (preferably under the dashboard to the centre of the vehicle). The area should not be readily accessible to the driver. Temporarily secure the ECU to this location while connecting the wiring harness.
- Remove fuse 37 (5A) from the IP fuse box. It is not required when an alcohol interlock device is installes.
- Snip off the alcohol interlock connector (1) with side cutters taking note of which cavities the wires match up with. Use the service schematic and the connector cavity information that is provided at the top of the document to determine which wires to use for installation.
- Place heat shrink tubing on all wires that are going to be connected.
- Connect the wires as follows:
Sequence From Alcohol Interlock ECU Wire To Alcohol Interlock Connector Cavity/Wire Function 1 Black 5 - Black Ground 2 Red 4 - P Pink 12V Power Source 3 Blue/Yellow 3 - Dark Green/Blue Cut Line In 4 2 x Blue 2 - Yellow Ignition 5 Green 1 - Orange Engine Run Signal - When all applicable wires are connected, insulated and the device has been tested, proceed to mount the ECU.
- Remove the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL FUSE BLOCK ACCESS HOLE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLCEMENT
- Install the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL FUSE BLOCK ACCESS HOLE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLCEMENT
- Place the alcohol interlock handset inside the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover.
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
- Program the BCM. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
Method 2 - Hardwire the device into the IP harness by cutting into the harness:
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
- Install the ECU in an accessible area that does not obstruct the normal operation of the vehicle (preferably under the dashboard to the centre of the vehicle). The area should not be readily accessible to the driver. Temporarily secure the ECU to this location while connecting the wiring harness.
- Remove fuse 37 (5A) from the IP fuse box. It is not required when an alcohol interlock device is installed.
- Place heat shrink tubing on all wires that are going to be used except the red, black and white wires.
- Crimp the terminal ring to the black ground wire in the wiring harness. Connect to a ground point with the metal crimp ring and screw provided.
- Using a multimeter, locate a continuous unswitched +12V or +24V power source in the vehicle main harness. Test the source in all ignition states including Start and Accessory. The +12V or +24V power source must be present in all states.
- Attach the 2 blue wires in the wiring harness to the starter side of the cut starter cable (see wiring diagram).
- Yellow/Orange wires. The default configuration for these wires is to provide the following output signals: Yellow wire - PASS alcohol test. Maximum current supplied is 100 mA. When an alcohol test result below the pre-set limit occurs, there will be a momentary output at the ECU input voltage. (red wire) Orange wire - Start Violation. Maximum current supplied is 100 mA. If the engine is started without a PASS breath test result, there will be a momentary output at the ECU input voltage. (red wire)
- Brown wire - FAIL alcohol test/driver retest lamp. Maximum current is 10A and the output voltage is at the ECU input voltage. (red wire) When the device is configured for a FAIL test output, the relay will latch momentarily to indicate a FAIL test result. The latch period is configurable upon ordering.
- When all applicable wires are connected, insulated and the device has been tested, proceed to mount the ECU with the wiring harness connector facing downwards (so that the open part of the ECU case would be facing down). Connect the handset cable to the ECU. Install the security enclosure as shown in the picture below:
- Remove the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL FUSE BLOCK ACCESS HOLE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLCEMENT
- Install the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL FUSE BLOCK ACCESS HOLE COVER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLCEMENT
- Place the V3 Handset inside the instrument panel fuse block access hole cover.
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
- Program the BCM. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
ECU and Connector Location Proposal:
IP Panel can be a strategic location for both Connector and ECU (both suppliers). The reason behind that is easier wiring harness route and less complexity within reach-out connectivity aftersales. The ECU dimensions for the suppliers are as follows:
| Supplier | Length | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALCOLOCK | 41 mm | 115 mm | 124 mm |
| DRAEGER | 32 mm | 90 mm | 148 mm |
The following figure represents the proposed solution with ECU mount behind for both suppliers IP Panel by passenger foot side area next to tunnel:
This specific location is proposed due to benchmarking cases, fitting that kind of installation by the passenger side, due to safety reasons and easier mounting and fitting accessibility.
