Ignition Timing Check/Adjust
CAUTION:
Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer for instructions. To prevent ignitor and coil damage, DO NOT
allow tachometer terminal to touch ground.
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Connect timing light and tachometer to engine. See Figure.
- Disconnect and plug vacuum hose(s) at distributor vacuum advance diaphragm. Start engine and ensure idle speed is within specification. See CURB IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATION tablein this article.
- Verify that ignition timing is within specification. See the IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATION TABLE . Correct any deviance by turning distributor.
- Reconnect vacuum hose(s) and check that timing with vacuum line connected is within specification. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATION table.
