Overhaul - Automatic Transmission: Operation
Power is transmitted from engine to the drive flange, which is connected with a central shaft via a clamping sleeve and transfers torque to the torque converter. The hydraulic torque converter multiplies engine torque 2.12 times when starting off, with stall speed at 2200 to 2600 RPM. A drive shaft connects the turbine wheel of the torque converter with the large sun gear of the planet gear set. A primary pump supplies the automatic transmission and the torque converter with lubricating and hydraulic oil.
Power is transmitted through a series of clutches and brake bands. A 1-way clutch locks in 1st and reverse gear.
A centrifugal governor delivers hydraulic pressure in accordance with road speed to influence the upshifts and downshifts in the valve body. The centrifugal governor drives the secondary pump. The pump builds up hydraulic pressure as an emergency pump in a rolling car with the engine stopped, so that it is possible to tow start the engine. When the vehicle is being towed the rotated pump will lubricate critical parts of the transmission
Shifting is controlled by pistons and valves hydraulically operated within the valve body assembly.
