Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor

  1. MAP sensor is mounted on the engine cowl above the TBI unit (1.6L) or in the air cleaner assembly (2.0L). It is connected to the intake manifold by a vacuum hose. When engine is off, MAP sensor functions as a Barometer (BARO). To check sensor, turn ignition on leaving engine off. Backprobe sensor connector and measure voltage between terminals "A" (5-V REF) and "C" (sensor ground). If 5 volts is not present, check continuity of 5-V REF and ground circuits between ECM and sensor. Measure voltage at sensor connector terminal "B" (MAP SIGNAL).
  2. Voltage should be as specified in MAP SENSOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS table. If not, replace MAP sensor. If voltage is correct, connect a vacuum pump and apply 10 in. Hg to MAP sensor. Voltage should be 1.2 volts less than previous reading and should change immediately. If voltage is not within specification or changes slowly, replace sensor. If a "Scan" tester is used either voltage or kPa pressure will be displayed.
