- Open driver's door and leave open. Tilt column to full up position. Ensure parking brake is set. Turn ignition switch to OFF-LOCK position and remove key. Try to move shift lever out of Park. If shift lever can be moved out of Park, check shift control cable adjustment. See SHIFT CONTROL CABLE under ADJUSTMENTS. Check for defective Brake Transaxle Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. Check for mechanical override lever stuck or solenoid plunger (swizzle stick) in depressed position.
- Insert key. Ensure key-in-ignition chime/alarm sounds. Turn ignition switch to RUN position (engine off). Try to move shift lever out of Park. If shift lever can be moved out of Park, check brakelight switch adjustment. Check PRNDL (10-amp) or ERLS (20-amp) fuse. Check wiring harness for poor connection, opens or shorts. Check for defective BTSI solenoid. Check for solenoid plunger (swizzle stick) in depressed position.
- Depress brake pedal. Move shift lever to "1" (Low) position, and then up to Neutral position. Turn ignition switch to OFF-LOCK position. Ignition switch should stop turning before reaching OFF-LOCK position, and key should not be able to be removed. If system does not operate as specified, replace electric park lock solenoid on steering column.
- With key in same position as in previous step (just before OFF-LOCK position), place shift lever in Park. Release shift lever button. If shift lever does not return fully to Park, check shifter cable and PRNDL for proper adjustment. Check for solenoid plunger (swizzle stick) in depressed position.
- Remove key. If key cannot be removed, repair/replace poor connection or defective electric park lock solenoid. If any adjustments or replacements have been made, repeat testing procedure.
