ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR THROTTLE HESITATION AND ENGINE STALLS WHEN COLD

ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR THROTTLE HESITATION AND ENGINE STALLS WHEN COLD

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): TSB-09-13-001, Date of Issue:  February 01, 2009
MITSUBISHI: 2008 Lancer
GROUP: : 13 - FUEL

PURPOSE

Customers of some California specification 2008MY Lancers with CVT, may complain of a throttle hesitation or engine stalling just after a cold engine start. A parameter in the ECM for cold air-fuel ratio was set leaner when cold in order to meet strict emission regulation requirements. This setting could present itself as a throttle hesitation due to a lack of fuel injection volume when first accelerating.

This Technical Service Bulletin advises the steps to reprogram the ECM with new parameters to repair the condition.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2008 Lancer w/CVT (CA Spec. vehicles only)

REQUIRED OPERATIONS

The following equipment is needed to reprogram the ECM.

If an affected vehicle has a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated and DTCs are listed in the ECM memory (before reprogramming), follow diagnostic instructions for the applicable DTCs per the service manual information. Do not reprogram the ECM until the reason for DTCs being set is corrected.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label previously installed to indicate that this reprogramming has already been done. If a label is present and the "ROM ID #" on the label matches the "New S/W Part No." in the table at the end of this bulletin, the ECM is to the latest level and reprogramming is not necessary.

For MEDIC II users only: (MUT-III users go to step  5)

  2. Verify that the MEDIC-II is at version 5.0 and at download MXXX or higher.

If your MEDIC-II Download is below MXXX  , update your MEDIC-II as follows.

    1. Select "Special Function", then select "ECU Reprogramming."
    2. Select "Database File Display (CAN)."
    3. The database version is displayed in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure the database version is N09011 or greater  .
    4. If the database version is N09011 or greater, reprogram the ECM as described in the Programming Procedure  beginning on page 4.
    5. If the database version is less than N09011  , check to see that your MUT-III version is at 20.0 or higher. If it is not at version 20.0 or higher, locate your MUT-III Scan Tool Viewer version 20.0 CD, and follow the instructions to update the laptop.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE KEPT AT 12.4V OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE ECM. MEASURE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND CHARGE AS NECESSARY. A BATTERY CHARGER SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY DURING THE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE. DO NOT ALLOW THE BATTERY CHARGER TO TIME OUT

NOTE: VCI Stand-alone reprogramming is not available for this procedure. The laptop and the VCI must remain connected for the entire procedure.

Connect the equipment as follows:

CAUTION: DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE REPROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE CONTROL UNIT TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE REPROGRAMMING. IF THE USB CABLE IS DISCONNECTED DURING THIS PROCEDURE, A WARNING MESSAGE WILL DISPLAY.
