General Disabling Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mercury Marauder, 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis, and 2003 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

This procedure should only be used when removing and installing air bag system components or when necessary to deactivate the system to facilitate other maintenance.

  1. Record pre-set radio frequencies for reprogramming, if equipped. Disconnect negative battery cable. Also, disconnect any auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  2. Remove steering column opening lower finish panel and reinforcement. Remove left lower instrument panel insulator. Disconnect lower clockspring harness connector, located at base of steering column. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) to harness side of lower clockspring connector.
  3. Remove passenger-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F403) to passenger-side air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag module).
  4. Connect negative battery cable. Move and tilt front seats to highest and most forward position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
    CAUTION: Removing side air bag bridge resistor can cause low resistance fault. AIR BAG warning light illumination and erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will result. Some models are not equipped with side air bags. Side air bag bridge resistors are installed in place of side air bags on these models. Do not remove side air bag bridge resistors unless directed.
  5. On models equipped with side air bags, push in tab on right side air bag module connector and disconnect connector. Install Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) on harness side of side air bag module connector. Repeat procedure for left side air bag module.
  6. Access and disconnect right front seat belt pretensioner connector. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to harness side of right front seat belt pretensioner connector (in place of pretensioner).
  7. Access and disconnect left front seat belt pretensioner connector. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F088/105-R0012) to harness side of left front seat belt pretensioner connector (in place of pretensioner).
  8. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all deployable devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
