Section 108 (Passive Anti-Theft Systems): Description
Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is designed to prevent driveaway thefts. The passive system means that it does not require any activity from the user. This system is known as SecuriLock. System uses radio frequency identification technology to verify proper key is being used to attempt to start the vehicle. All elements of PATS must be functional before the engine is allowed to start. If any of the components are not working correctly, vehicle will not start. PATS contains the following components:
- Theft indicator light.
- Encoded ignition key.
- Transceiver module.
- Instrument cluster.
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) communication network.
- System related fuses and wiring.
During each starting sequence, the transceiver module reads encoded ignition key identification code and sends data to instrument cluster. If the key's identification code is programmed into anti-theft system, vehicle is capable of starting. If key's identification code is incorrect or missing, vehicle is prevented from starting.
Instrument cluster communicates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) communication network. PCM then determines if engine will be enabled to start. If PCM prevents vehicle from starting because of PATS system, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in instrument cluster memory.
PATS is not compatible with aftermarket remote start systems, which allow vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. Remote start systems must be removed before investigation of PATS related no-start issues.
