Quick Test: Notes

NOTE: Following diagnostic procedures utilize instrument cluster Overdrive OFF Light (ODL) or a Ford New Generation STAR (NGS) tester. If using aftermarket scan tester, refer to manufacturer's instruction manual for appropriate procedure. DTCs can also be retrieved using Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), for procedures see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  1. Perform Visual Test  Ensure coolant and engine oil level is correct. Ensure transaxle fluid level is correct. Check shift linkage operation. Inspect wiring harnesses, connectors, connector terminals and fuses. Inspect TCM sensors and actuators for physical damage. Check condition of battery and charging system output. Ensure all repairs needed are completed before proceeding. Go to next step.
  2. Perform Vehicle Preparation  Set parking brake. Ensure shift selector is in Park position. Block drive wheels. Ensure all accessories are off (no switched electrical loads). Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached. Go to next step.
NOTE: Some circuit test procedures specify the use of the diagnostic connector. See Fig 1 . The diagnostic connector provides access to non-OBD-II functions. This connector is not generally used during normal diagnostic procedures.
  3. Equipment Hookup  Turn ignition off. Insert proper EPROM memory card into Rotunda New Generation STAR (NGS) tester (007-00500). See Fig 2 . Attach OBD-II (16-pin) data cable to NGS tester. Connect OBD-II data cable to OBD-II data link connector (located under left side of instrument panel). See Fig 1 . Plug power cable into cigar lighter. Turn ignition on. If using Overdrive OFF Light (ODL) for reading DTCs, no equipment hookup is needed. ODL switch is located on end of gearshift handle. If using ODL, go to step 5). If using NGS tester or generic scan tester, go to next step.

  4. Perform Switch Monitor Test Using NGS Tester  Turn ignition on. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK. Select TCM - TRANSAXLE CTRL MODULE. Select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD. Select individual switches. See SWITCH MONITOR TEST CHART. If all switches are operating correctly, go to next step. If any switch is malfunctioning, go to appropriate PINPOINT TEST for diagnosis of selected faulty switch, as defined in SWITCH MONITOR TEST CHART. If NGS tester is not able to access TCM - TRANSAXLE CTRL MODULE, go to PINPOINT TEST QA  .
