Steering Gear: Disassembly
- Remove steering gear, See STEERING GEAR
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Drain steering gear. Mount gear in a soft-jawed vise. Center steering gear by turning input shaft from stop to stop, counting total number of turns. Then turn input shaft back exactly half way. When centered, flat surface on input shaft spline should be facing down.
- Remove sector shaft cover bolts. Tap lower end of sector shaft with a soft-faced hammer to loosen shaft in bore. Lift sector shaft and cover assembly from housing. Discard cover "O" ring. Remove lock nut from sector shaft adjusting screw. Turn sector shaft cover counterclockwise and remove cover from adjusting screw.
- Remove valve housing attaching bolts and identification tag. Remove valve housing, valve and piston assembly, and gasket. Discard gasket. Hold piston assembly over a clean container. Remove ball guide clamp screws and remove clamp. Allow guide tubes and balls to fall into container. Rotate input shaft from lock to lock until all balls fall from piston into container. Ensure all balls have been removed.
- Install valve body assembly in bench-mounted Holding Fixture (T57L-500-B
) or soft-jawed vise. Loosen Allen head race nut screw from valve housing. Remove worm bearing race nut using Wrench (T66P-3553-B
) and Valve Housing-To-Piston Spacer (T66P-3553-C
). See Fig 1
. Carefully slide input shaft, worm and valve assembly out of val ve housing.
