Removal and Installation

All vehicles

Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING in SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

NOTE: Apply tape to clockspring to prevent movement.

Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING WHEEL .

NOTE: Lower the tilt release handle to access the second screw.

Remove the 2 screws and the lower steering column shroud.
From under the steering column, remove the screw and the upper steering column shroud.

Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
Remove the screws and the instrument panel steering column cover.

Position aside the hood release handle.
Remove the screws and the steering column cover reinforcement.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.

Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the push pin from the steering column.

Disconnect the PATS transceiver electrical connector.

Vehicles with column shift

Detach the shift cable from the steering column and the bracket.
Remove the bolt and disconnect the transmission range indicator cable.
Remove the screw.

Disconnect the overdrive cancel switch electrical connector.

All vehicles

Remove the screws and detach the conduit from the steering column.
Remove the bolt and detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- Discard the bolt.
- To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
Remove the nuts and the steering column.
- Discard the nuts.
  - To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).

CAUTION: Make sure that the column support is flush with the instrument panel before tightening the nuts.
