Section 19 (Manual A/C-Heater Systems): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Ford Expedition and 2000 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.

Manual A/C-heater system is a cycling-clutch, fixed orifice tube type. Compressor operation is controlled by A/C cycling switch. A compressor pressure relief valve in compressor manifold and tube assembly protects against excessively high pressures. Fixed orifice tube is in low side refrigerant line at evaporator connection. Evaporator and heater cores are contained in a one-piece plenum assembly, mounted under instrument panel. See Fig 1.

An optional auxiliary air conditioning and heating system is available. The auxiliary system operates in conjunction with main system, and provides climate control only to rear of vehicle. Auxiliary system is a one piece unit located on left side of vehicle, between side window and floorpan, behind rear wheelwell and consists of control panel(s), blower motors, heater core, evaporator core and thermostatic expansion valve. Main A/C system must be on for auxiliary system to operate. Driver has primary control of auxiliary A/C-heating, mounted in overhead console or in center floor console, and can transfer control to a rear passenger control panel mounted in a separate overhead console or in rear of center floor console. Center console has ventilation system for rear passenger. Center console is supplied with air from main housing chamber. A separate blower motor is located in center console. See Figure. Auxiliary A/C system refrigerant lines run beneath the floorpan. See Figure.
