Torque Converter And Drive Plate: Inspection
- INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
- Inspect the 1-way clutch.
- Press on the serrations of the stator with a finger and rotate the stator. Check that the stator rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks when turned counterclockwise. If necessary, clean the converter and recheck the 1-way clutch.
Replace the converter if the 1-way clutch still fails the check.
- Determine the condition of the torque converter clutch.
- Check that the following conditions are met:
- During the stall test or when the shift lever is in N, metallic sounds are not emitted from the torque converter clutch.
- The 1-way clutch turns in one direction and locks in the other direction.
- The amount of powder in the ATF is not more than the sample shown in the illustration.
HINT:
The sample illustration shows approximately 0.25 liters (0.26 US qts, 0.22 lmp. qts) of ATF taken from a removed torque converter clutch.
- Check that the following conditions are met:
- Replace the ATF in the torque converter clutch.
- If the ATF is discolored and/or has a foul odor, completely stir the ATF in the torque converter clutch and drain the ATF with the torque converter facing upward.
- Inspect the 1-way clutch.
- INSPECT DRIVE PLATE
- Check the drive plate for damage.
- Set up a dial indicator and measure the runout of the 6 portions around the torque converter fitting surfaces.
Maximum runout:
0.30 mm (0.018 in.)
If the runout is more than the maximum or if the drive plate is damaged, replace the drive plate. If installing a new drive pate, be careful of the orientation of the spacers and tighten the bolts (See INSTALLATION ).
