Clutch Assembly: Inspection

  1. Check wear on facings of clutch disc by measuring depth of each rivet head. Minimum depth at any rivet head is .012" (.30 mm).
  2. Check clutch disc runout. Maximum runout at facing on clutch disc is .031" (.80 mm). Replace clutch disc if not within specification.
  3. Using a dial indicator, check flywheel runout. Replace flywheel if flywheel runout is greater than .004" (.10 mm). See Fig 1.
  4. Using a caliper, measure depth and wear on diaphragm spring on clutch cover. See Fig 2. Maximum depth is .024" (.60 mm) and maximum width is .197" (5.00 mm). Replace clutch cover if necessary.
  5. Rotate pilot bearing by hand while applying force in direction of rotation. If the bearing sticks or has too much resistance, replace the bearing using the following steps:
    1. Remove 2 bolts at diametrically opposite points on flywheel.
    2. Using Pilot Bearing Remover (093030-35011) to remove bearing. See Fig 3.
    3. Using Pilot Bearing Installer (09304-30012) and a hammer to install new pilot bearing. See Fig 4.
    4. After assembling new bearing to hub, ensure that bearing rotates smoothly.
    5. Install 2 NEW bolts on flywheel. Tighten to proper specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Turn release bearing while applying axial force and ensure clutch release bearing rotates smoothly. Replace clutch release bearing if necessary.
  7. After clutch cover installation, using a dial indicator, check diaphragm spring tip runout. If diaphragm spring tip runout is greater than .020" (.50 mm), adjust clutch cover spring tips using Clutch Diaphragm Spring Adjuster (09333-00013). See Fig 5.
