Upper Control Arm: Notes
REMOVAL
The air suspension system can be disabled and enabled by using the Display Screen Module (DSM) in the vehicle under Tire Jack Mode, which is the preferred method. If the disable level control routine in the diagnostic scan tool is used, it will only disable the level control (automatic and manual) for that ignition cycle. The air suspension system can also be enabled by driving the vehicle above 19 km/h (12 mph). The air suspension must be disabled prior to lifting the vehicle or performing any work.
- If equipped with air suspension, disable the air suspension system.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped with air suspension, use a diagnostic scan tool to perform the Spring Deflate To Reservoir routine.
- If equipped with air suspension, disconnect the clevis bracket from the lower control arm. Refer to BRACKET, CLEVIS, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped with air suspension, gently lift the cowl panel slightly and support it away from the shock absorber.
- If equipped with air suspension, disconnect the air line from shock absorber. Refer to SHOCK ABSORBER, SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped with air suspension, disconnect the shock absorber from the shock tower and position it aside. Refer to SHOCK ABSORBER, SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
1 - Wire Harness Routing Clip - Disengage the wire harness routing clip.
1 - Active Damper Sensor Bolt 2 - Wire Harness Connector - Disconnect the active damping sensor wire harness connector.
1-4 - Wire Harness Routing Clips - Disengage the wire harness routing clips.
1 - Upper Control Arm Bolts 2 - Steering Knuckle Pinch Bolt 3 - Ride Height Sensor Rod - If equipped with air suspension, disconnect the front ride height sensor rod from the upper control arm ball stud.CAUTION:
The upper control arm must be pulled down slightly so there is no tension drawing the ball joint stud out of the steering knuckle when loosening or tightening the steering knuckle pinch bolt. Steering knuckle pinch bolt damage may occur if the ball joint stud notch is not centered to the steering knuckle pinch bolt.
CAUTION:DO NOT attempt to rotate the steering knuckle pinch nut. The steering knuckle pinch nut is pressed in the steering knuckle and damage will occur if the nut is rotated.
- Hold the nut and remove the steering knuckle pinch bolt.
- Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the upper control arm bolts.
- Remove upper control arm.
INSTALLATION
During installation, torque the fasteners to the specifications in the torque table(s) below.
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
DO NOT attempt to rotate the clevis lower nut. The clevis lower nut is pressed in the clevis bracket and damage will occur if the nut is rotated.
In any instance where a bolt is through a rubber bushing, the bolt must be torqued with the vehicle at normal ride height.
- Hold the nut while tightening the steering knuckle pinch bolt.
