Direct Clutch Assembly: Reassembly

Lubricate and install replacement "O" rings on clutch piston. Install clutch piston in drum and return springs on piston. Using Compressor Tool (B.Vi FM-27) compress piston return springs and install snap ring. Ensure snap ring end gap is NOT aligned with spring retainer tab. Install clutch pack into drum. Install plate first and then discs until all discs are installed. See DIRECT CLUTCH PLATE USAGE table.
Install clutch pack retainer and snap ring. See Fig 1 . Check snap ring position. If necessary, shift snap ring until end gap is NOT aligned with any notches in clutch drum. Recheck clutch piston stroke length. If length is correct continue to reassemble. If stroke length is incorrect, replace clutch discs or use different thickness clutch pack retainer. Lubricate clutch drum thrust washer with petroleum jelly and install in drum. See Figure .
Mount direct clutch assembly on forward clutch assembly and check assembled height. Height should be 2.767-2.815" (70.3-71.5 mm). If assembled height is incorrect, clutches are not seated. See Fig 2 .
