Direct Clutch Assembly: Disassembly

  1. Remove clutch thrust washer. See Fig 1 . Check clutch piston stroke length. See Fig 2 . Apply 57-114 psi air pressure through feed hole in overdrive support and note piston stroke length. Check stroke at least twice piston stroke length should be .054-.064" (1.37-1.63 mm). If stroke is incorrect, either the clutch pack retainer or clutch discs need to be replaced.
  2. Compress clutch springs. Remove snap ring and retainer. Remove direct clutch piston. Remove and discard clutch piston "O" rings.
  3. Measure free length of piston return springs with springs in retainer. Length should be .839" (21.32 mm). Measure clutch disc thickness. Minimum allowable thickness is .072" (1.83 mm). See DIRECT CLUTCH PLATE MEASUREMENT  table for minimum thickness requirements.
  4. Check direct clutch piston check ball. Shake piston to see if ball moves freely. Check ball seating by applying low pressure compressed air to ball inlet. Air should NOT leak past check ball. See Fig 2 . Measure inside diameter of clutch drum bushing. I.D. should be no more than 2.125" (53.98 mm). Replace drum if bushing I.D. is greater than specified.
