Alternator Test

NOTE: Before starting test, ensure battery is fully charged.
  1. Check fusible link. Replace if necessary. Turn ignition on, and check charge indicator light on instrument panel. If light comes on, go to step 4). If light is off, go to next step.
NOTE: Terminals "S", "L", "B", and "E" are marked on alternator's rear cover. Terminal "F" is an internal terminal.
  2. Disconnect terminals "S" and "L". Ground terminal "L" wire. If light remains off, replace indicator bulb and repeat step 1). If light comes on, replace damaged generator parts (Mitsubishi) or go to next step (Hitachi).
  3. Reconnect terminals "S" and "L". Ground internal terminal "F" using a stiff wire. See Fig 1 . If light is on, replace IC regulator. If light is off, IC regulator is okay. Check remaining generator parts. Repair or replace as necessary.
  4. Start and run engine at idle. If indicator light is dim, flickers or remains fully on, go to step 6). If indicator light is off, operate engine at 1500 RPM and turn on headlights. Check charge indicator light.
  5. If indicator light comes on, repair damaged generator parts (except IC regulator). If indicator light remains off, ensure terminals "S" and "L" are properly connected. Run engine at 1500 RPM, and measure voltage at terminal "B". If voltage is more than 15.5 volts, replace IC regulator. If voltage is 13-15 volts, system is okay.
  6. Turn engine off. Check drive belt, and adjust or replace as necessary. Recheck indicator light with engine idling. If drive belt is okay or indicator light remains the same after adjusting or replacing belt, repair or replace damaged generator parts (except IC regulator). If light is off, system is okay.
