Dimmer Switch Circuit

  1. Turn ignition off. Carefully pry dimmer switch from dashboard. Dash light brightness controller is built into dimmer switch assembly. Disconnect dimmer switch 3-pin connector and inspect connector and switch terminals for damage or corrosion. Repair or replace as necessary.
  2. With headlight switch on or off, use a DVOM to check for continuity between dimmer switch 3-pin connector Black wire and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open Black wire or poor ground connection, located in right front corner of engine compartment. Check ground connector, located behind left kick panel. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .
  3. With headlight switch on, use a DVOM to check for battery voltage between dimmer switch 3-pin connector Red/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace blown underdash fuse, No. 30 (7.5 amp) fuse. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. With headlight switch on, use a jumper wire to ground dimmer switch 3-pin connector Red wire. If dash lights illuminate, dimmer switch circuits are okay, replace dimmer switch. If dash lights do not illuminate, repair open in Red wire.
