Removal And Installation

WARNING: All safety belt assemblies (including retractors, belt tension sensors [BTS] if equipped, buckles, shoulder belt height adjusters, [if so equipped], child safety seat tether attachments and attaching hardware) should be inspected after any collision. All new belt assemblies should be installed unless a qualified technician finds the assemblies show no damage and operate correctly. Belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and new assemblies installed if either damage or incorrect operation is noted.

The automatic locking retractor (ALR) feature of the safety belt retractor must be checked by a qualified technician to verify that the ALR feature for a child seat is functioning correctly, in addition to the other checks for correct safety belt system function. A new belt and retractor assembly must be installed if the safety belt assembly automatic locking retractor feature or any other safety belt function is not operating correctly when inspected according to the appropriate functional inspection procedures under Component Test . Failure to install a new belt and retractor assembly could increase the risk of injury in collisions.

Driver side and passenger side 

  1. Position the front seat to its most forward position.
  2. Remove the front scuff plate.
    3. NOTE: If the safety belt guide cover is damaged or if it does not remain attached, install a new cover.
  3. Remove the D-ring cover.
  4. Remove the nut and the D-ring.
    • To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  5. Remove the upper B-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION article.

    6. Driver side 

  6. Remove the bolt and the lower safety belt anchor.
    • To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

    7. Passenger side  

  7. Depower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  8. Remove the lower safety belt anchor.
    • Raise the safety belt anchor boot.
    • Remove the bolt and the safety belt anchor.
      • To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    9. NOTE: Position the lower B-pillar trim panel aside to access the belt tension sensor connector.
    NOTE: Notice the position of the belt tension sensor wiring harness through the carpet opening.
  9. Disconnect the belt tension sensor electrical connector.

    CAUTION: Observe the position of the belt tension sensor harness and connector to prevent damage.
  10. Route the safety belt anchor and belt tension sensor connector out of the B-pillar trim panel.

    Driver side and passenger side 

  11. Route the safety belt anchor out and remove the lower B-pillar trim panel.

  12. Remove the secondary safety belt guide.
  13. Remove the bolt and the safety belt retractor.
    • To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    14. NOTE: Make sure the safety belt webbing is not twisted prior to installation.
  14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

    15. Passenger side only 

  15. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

    16. Driver side and passenger side 

  16. Check the active restraint system for correct operation. For additional information, refer to Safety Belt System .
