Front Windshield Wiper System

  1. Windshield Wiper Function Check

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check all wiper switch in the order shown:
    • Low speed
    • High speed
    • Park
    • Interval
    • One-touch
If wiper system is not working, go to next step.
    • If low speed is not working, go to step  3 .
    • If high speed is not working, go to step  3 .
    • If park is not working, go to step  8 .
    • If wiper won't stop, go to step  7 .
    • If interval will not work, go to step  9 .
If one-touch is not working, replace windshield wiper switch. See WIPER SWITCH/INTERVAL WIPER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Windshield Wiper Motor Supply Check

Disconnect wiper motor connector. Turn ignition to the ON position. Check for battery voltage on the Blue wire at wiper motor connector. Is there battery voltage present? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6 .
  3. Windshield Wiper Motor Ground Check

Disconnect windshield wiper motor connector. Check for continuity to ground on the Blue/White wire at windshield wiper motor with switch in LOW position. Check for continuity to ground on Blue/Red wire at windshield wiper motor with switch in HIGH position. Is there continuity for both high and low? If yes, replace the wiper motor. See FRONT WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, and the wipers do not work, go to next step. If no, and low or high does not work, go to step  5 .
  4. Windshield Wiper/Washer Switch Ground Check

Disconnect the windshield wiper switch connector. Check for continuity to ground on the Black wire at windshield wiper switch. Is there continuity? If yes, to go next step. If no, service the Black wire to ground.
  5. Windshield Wiper/Washer Switch Operation

Disconnect the windshield wiper switch connector. Check for continuity to Black terminal. With the switch in the LOW position, check for continuity between Blue/White wire terminal and Black wire terminal. With the switch position in the HIGH position, check for continuity between the Blue/Red wire terminal and the Black wire terminal. Is there continuity between terminals? If yes, service the Blue/White and Blue/Red wires between the windshield wiper switch and windshield wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no, replace the windshield wiper switch. See WIPER SWITCH/INTERVAL WIPER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Power To Wiper Fuse

Remove wiper fuse at fuse panel. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . Check for battery voltage at wiper fuse (ignition switch side). Is battery voltage present? If yes, service fuse and/or Blue wire to windshield wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no, service Black/Red wire to ignition switch. See 1990 WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Windshield Wiper Switch Check

Disconnect wiper switch connector. Does wiper motor stop? If yes, replace wiper switch. See WIPER SWITCH/INTERVAL WIPER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, repair shorted wire between wiper switch and wiper motor. If wiper is running in high speed, repair Blue/Red wire. If wiper is running in low speed, repair Blue/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  8. Windshield Wiper Motor Continuity Check

Place wipers out of park position. Remove wiper fuse. Ensure wiper switch is off. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Check for continuity to ground at the motor case and the Blue/Black terminal at the motor. Is there continuity? If yes, go to step  10 . If there is no continuity at motor case, repair ground of wiper motor. If there is no continuity at the Blue/Black terminal, replace wiper motor. See FRONT WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Windshield Wiper Switch Supply Check

Disconnect wiper switch connector. Check for battery voltage at Blue wire of wiper switch connector with the ignition in the ON position. Is battery voltage present? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Blue wire between wiper fuse and wiper switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  10. Power To Wiper Switch Blue/Black Wire

Disconnect wiper switch connector. Place wipers in PARK position with the ignition in the ON position. Check for battery voltage on the Blue/Black wire to wiper switch. Is battery voltage present? If yes, replace wiper switch. See WIPER SWITCH/INTERVAL WIPER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, go to next step.
  11. Wiper Motor Park Range Check

Disconnect wiper motor connector. Place wiper in PARK position. Check continuity between wiper motor terminals Blue/Black and Blue. Is there continuity? If yes, repair Blue/Black wire between wiper switch and wiper motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no, replace wiper motor. See FRONT WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
