Rotor Field Coil Check

NOTE: Terminal "F" is internal and can be accessed through hole in rear housing of alternator. Be sure ohmmeter probe does not touch alternator housing while performing this test.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable, alternator wiring plug and "B+" wire at alternator output terminal.
  2. Set ohmmeter in "x1" range. Connect one ohmmeter probe to alternator terminal "L" and other probe to alternator terminal "F". See Figure.
  3. If ohmmeter reading is between 3-6 ohms, problem in IC regulator is indicated. If reading is less than 3 ohms or more than 6 ohms, problem is indicated in rotor field coil, slip rings or brushes. Remove alternator for further testing. See appropriate test under BENCH TESTS in this article.
