Inspection Procedure 46 - Ignition Signal Circuit

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector at ignition power transistor. Ignition power transistor is mounted on top of engine, near ignition coil and contains an 8-pin Black connector.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire) on wiring harness side of connector for ignition power transistor.
NOTE: When checking voltage at terminal No. 6 (Black/White wire) on the connector for ignition power transistor, terminal No. 6 is closer to the center of the connector. DO NOT use Black/White wire at terminal No. 8 at the end of the connector.
  3. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to step 6). If battery voltage does not exist, check for defective terminals or connections at ignition switch.
  4. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  .
  5. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ignition switch and ignition power transistor. Repair wiring harness if defective. If wiring harness is okay, check ignition switch.
  6. Ensure ignition is on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (White wire) on wiring harness side of connector for ignition power transistor. Voltage should be at least 4 volts.
  7. If voltage is within specification, go to next step. If voltage is not within specification, an open or short circuit exists in the ignition signal output wiring harness between ECM and ignition power transistor. Repair wiring harness. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console.
  8. Reinstall connector on ignition power resistor. Access connectors on ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console.
  9. Start engine. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 58 (White wire) on 12-pin ECM connector B-55.
  10. Voltage should be .3-3.0 volts with engine at 3000 RPM. If voltage is within specification, replace ECM. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  11. Check for defective terminals or connections on 12-pin ECM connector B-55 and at connector on ignition power transistor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See the TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION
  12. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and ignition power transistor. Repair wiring harness if defective. If wiring harness is okay, replace ignition power transistor.
