DTC Test No. 1 - Volume Airflow Sensor

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Possible causes for DTC are: defective volume airflow sensor, loose connector, open or shorted volume airflow sensor wiring circuit or defective ECM.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from volume airflow sensor. Volume airflow sensor is located on passenger's side of engine compartment, near air cleaner. Install Test Harness (MB991348) between volume airflow sensor and the connector.
  2. Start engine. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and test harness terminal No. 3 with engine idling. Voltage should be 2.2-3.2 volts.
  3. If voltage is within specification, go to next step 4). If voltage is not within specification, check volume airflow sensor circuit. See INSPECTION PROCEDURE 43 under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS.
  4. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and test harness terminal No. 7. Voltage should be 0-1 volt with engine idling, and 6-9 volts with engine at 2000 RPM. If voltage is within specification, replace ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Reinstall connector on volume airflow sensor. Access connectors on ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console.
  6. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 19 (Red/White wire) on 26-pin ECM connector B-53. Voltage should be 6-9 volts.
  7. If voltage is within specs, check for defective terminals or connections on 26-pin ECM connector B-53. If terminals/connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals/connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. If no trouble symptom exists, replace ECM.
  8. If voltage is not within specification, check for defective terminals or connections on connector for volume airflow sensor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. If no trouble symptom exists, replace volume airflow sensor.
