Power Steering Gear: Installation

  1. Install steering gear back in vehicle using reverse order of removal through left front fender well. See Figure. Align steering gear with steering gear mounting brackets. Install 2 steering gear to mounting bracket attaching bolts and steering gear shims. See Figure. Snug down 2 steering gear to mounting bracket attaching bolts to hold steering gear shims in place.
CAUTION: Install Toe Pattern shims in their original locations when steering gear is installed in vehicle.
CAUTION: Achieving required torque value on steering gear mounting bolts, is required when installing steering gear. Tightening mounting bolts to correct torque will eliminate any movement between steering gear and steering gear mounting brackets. Any movement of steering gear, will adversely affect front wheel toe pattern and handling of vehicle.
  2. Using Adapter, Special Tool (6632), torque both steering gear mounting bolts to 203 N m (150 ft. lbs.). When using Adapter, Special Tool 6632, for final torquing of steering gear mounting bolts. Torque wrench must be positioned as shown in to accurately torque mounting bolts. See Fig 1. Install outer tie rod ends on steering knuckles. Install tie rod end to steering knuckle attaching nuts. Tighten tie rod end castle nuts to 51 N m (38 ft. lbs.). See Figure. Install cotter pins in tie rod ends.
  3. Position stabilizer bar and retainers against frame rails. Install 4 attaching bolts for stabilizer bar bushing retainers. Tighten stabilizer bar bushing retainer attaching bolts to 23 N m (200 INCH lbs.). Install wheels and tires. Tighten wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat tightening sequence to full specified torque of 122 N m (90 ft. lbs.). Lower vehicle.
  4. Install power steering pressure hose and return hose in steering gear fluid ports. See Figure. Torque power steering pressure hose and return hose to steering gear tube nuts to 29 N m (252 INCH lbs.). Align master splines on universal joint of intermediate steering shaft and steering gear shaft. Then using a soft (brass) drift and hammer install universal joint on steering gear shaft until flat on steering gear shaft is aligned with bolt hole in universal joint.
  5. Install universal joint to steering gear shaft retaining bolt. See Figure. Tighten retaining bolt to 41 N m (30 ft. lbs.). Install air cleaner in vehicle using following procedure:
    • Install air cleaner and hoses on throttle bodies. See Figure.
    • Line up 3 fastener holes in air cleaner housing with 2 j-nut locations on radiator support and 1 on cross-car beam. See Figure.
    • Install 3 air cleaner assembly mounting screws but do not tighten.
    • Be sure both clean air hoses are fully installed on inlets of throttle bodies then tighten hose clamps to 3 N m (25 INCH lbs.).
    • Torque 3 air cleaner assembly attaching screws to 3 N m (25 INCH lbs).
    • Install wiring harness connector onto charge air temperature sensor in air cleaner housing.
    • Install crank case vent and Idle Air Control (IAC) hoses onto their fittings in air cleaner housing.
  6. Connect negative battery cable to battery negative post. Fill power steering pump reservoir to correct fluid level. Perform Power Steering Pump Initial Operation procedure. Check for leaks at all hose connections. Adjust front wheel toe in on vehicle.
CAUTION: Do not use automatic transmission fluid in power steering system. Only use Mopar(R) Power Steering Fluid or equivalent.
