Steering Column - Ram-50: Reassembly
- To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Apply grease to dust cover grommet.
- On 2WD models, apply grease to both ends of horn ground spring and inner surface of bushing prior to installation.
- On 4WD models, install upper boot on upper steering shaft and lower boot and dust cover on lower steering shaft. Leave boots on shafts without assembling them to the universal joint.
- Apply multipurpose grease to upper and lower steering shafts prior to assembly. Assemble upper and lower steering shafts so yoke of upper steering shaft is properly positioned with yoke of lower steering shaft. See Figure. Install upper and lower boots and dust cover with arrow on boots aligned with slit area on the yoke.
- On all applications, align steering lock with column boss. Ensure steering lock is operational. Tighten bolt until bolt head breaks off. Apply grease to tilt lever screw prior to installation.
- Install tilt lever fully onto tilt lever screw. Install tilt lever into tilt lever bolt. The tilt lever is threaded in the opposite direction. Ensure end of tilt lever screw contacts tilt bracket stopper plate prior to installing tilt lever. Ensure steering column locks in proper positions. See Fig 2.
- If steering column fails to lock in proper positions, adjust position of tilt lever screw end which touches the stopper plate.
- On A/T applications, apply grease to bushing (located in end of gearshift) and all gearshift contact areas prior to installation. If link assembly was replaced or loosened, adjust the link so that distance "A" is 2.098-2.114" (53.29-53.69 mm). See Fig 1.
