Driveshaft Positioning: Notes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Plymouth Voyager, 1989 Plymouth Grand Voyager, 1989 Dodge Grand Caravan, and 1989 Dodge Caravan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Front wheel drive vehicles have engine mounts with slotted holes allowing for side to side positioning of the engine. If vertical bolts on right or left upper engine mount have been loosened for any reason, of if vehicle has experienced front structural damage, driveshaft lengths must be checked and corrected, if required. A shorter than required driveshaft length can result in objectionable noise. A longer than required driveshaft length may result in potential damage.
Using the following procedure will insure satisfactory driveshaft engagement under all normal vehicle operating conditions.
- Vehicle must be completely assembled. Front wheels must be properly aligned and in straight ahead position. The vehicle must be in a position so that full weight of body is distributed to all four tires. A platform hoist, or front end alignment rack is recommended.
- Using a tape measure or other suitable measuring device, measure direct distance from inner edge of outboard boot to inner edge of inboard boot on both driveshafts. This measurement must be taken at bottom (6 o'clock position) of driveshafts.NOTE: Required dimensions vary with driveshaft manufacturer.
- If lengths of both shafts are within range specified, no further action is required. If either left or right shaft length is not within specification, see ENGINE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION of engine to properly position engine according to driveshaft lengths specified.
- If proper driveshaft lengths cannot be achieved within travel limits available in slotted engine mounts, check for any condition that could effect side to side portion of measurement location (e.g., engine support brackets, siderail alignment, etc.).
- After insuring proper driveshaft lengths the transmission shift linkage must be readjusted to ensure proper operation.
