Clutch Assembly: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect negative cable at transaxle. Disconnect speedometer cable and wire connectors from transaxle. Remove clutch cable from release lever. Drain transaxle oil.
  2. Disconnect shift cables from transaxle. Remove air cleaner heat tube. Remove upper bolts attaching transaxle to engine.
  3. Loosen lug nuts on front left wheel. Raise vehicle and remove left front wheel. On Spectrum, remove splash shield. Disconnect left tie rod at steering knuckle. Remove left tension rod.
  4. Disconnect drive axles from transaxle. Remove shafts from transaxle case by pulling straight out. To prevent damage to oil seals, use care when removing drive axles from transaxle. Remove dust cover at clutch housing.
  5. Support transaxle with a jack. Remove mounting bolts from body and transaxle.
  6. Remove remaining bolts and nuts attaching transaxle to engine. Slide transaxle toward left side and lower transaxle from vehicle. Install clutch centering tool to support clutch assembly.
  7. Look for "X" mark or White painted letter on clutch cover and "X" mark stamped on flywheel. If there are no markings, index mark flywheel and clutch cover for assembly purposes.
  8. Loosen bolts attaching clutch cover to flywheel one turn at a time until spring pressure is released. Remove bolts. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc.
