Inspection Procedure
CAUTION:
Vehicles involved in collisions may also have a damaged or misaligned steering column that is not obvious based on initial in-vehicle review. This inspection procedure is provided to ensure full steering column functionality after a collision before considering reuse. This procedure is not intended for use in collisions where replacement of the steering column is directed- such as those with frontal air bag deployment and side seat air bag deployment.
- Remove the steering wheel. Steering Wheel Replacement
- Turn Signal Switch Bracket - Remove - Turn Signal Switch Bracket Replacement
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Steering Column Replacement
- Rotate the steering column shaft. Verify the shaft turns freely and without interference during the operation and visually inspect upper and lower bearing for no apparent damage.
- Unlock the rake lever and telescope the upper jacket to the fully compressed position. Then lock the rake lever.
- Measure the length from the top of the upper shaft to the rake pivot centerline (a). This dimension should be 391.0 mm +/- 5 mm (15.4 in +/- 0.2 in).
- Verify the rake guide teeth (1) are not fractured or damaged.
- Verify the 4 mounting locations (1) are not cracked or damaged.
- If the steering column does NOT meet the specifications, the steering column is damaged. DISCARD the damaged steering column and install a NEW steering column.
